The grade 12 students at The Launceston Church Grammar School raised enough money to set up a brick making venture in the Trans Mara. The Mitshibushi Canter is used to transport sand, clay and mud to the site where the bricks are being made. They are then transported to town and buiding sites where where are sold.

Rosy Green, (Senior  Lecturer, University of Tasmania, faculity of Nursing) has been working with Alisha Butterworth and Diana Butler,  and four nursing students at The Tasmanian University, Susan Firth, Tiffany Guy, Rachael Reid and Charmaine Box to establish a Care for Africa Health Manual. The students presented papers on chamydia, schistosoma, malnutrition and helico bacter pylori.

This manual will be vital for our volunteers working out of the ambulance bringing effective primary acute and chronic health care to the people living in outlying communities in Tarime.

This semester we have another four students, Kerrie Lyons, Shauna Williams, Lilia Celeste, Kylie Carr and Kim Johnson. The students will be covering malaria, HIV, cultural care and intestinal worms.

 … During our last visit our enthusiastic team of nurses established an extensive patient database with treatment and management plans some of which have already been effectively implemented.

Orphans from Angel House Orphanage with volunteers Paul Stathum & Kara Bell

Treasures for Tarime

My husband is travelling to TARIME, TANZANIA in a few weeks with Care for Africa. I have organised a small fund raising drive called “TREASURES FOR TARIME”.
There are 46 Children that live in an orphanage in Tarime, Tanzania – My challenge is to make enough dresses and shorts to ensure that each children has a new outfit!!

I’m putting the challenge out to everyone I know to help with donating any of the following items;
• 1 x Brand New T-Shirt – plain is fine – in any child size up to size 14 OR;
• 1 metre each of two matching prints & 2 metres of matching ribbon to make a ‘pillowcase’ dress for one little orphan girl OR;
• 1 metre of Soft Denim or Cotton Drill and 1 metre of pant elastic to make a pair of shorts for one little orphan boy

We are having a ‘sewing bee’ on September 10 to complete this task. My husband will be personally delivering these items to the children of TARIME late September and we would much appreciate you help – one small amount will make a difference.

Our two little albino girl sisters, Sarafina and Eliza. Thanks to Brent & Stacey Pendry and The Deloraine Rotary Club for sponsoring these two girls for their education.
Without their generosity, these little sister’s lives would be a great risk, because albinos are often poached by witch doctors, killed so their body parts are sold for magical potions.
The girls are both doing very well at St Jude’s Primary Boarding School, Tarime.
Once they are educated, they will have a wonderful future and will no longer be living a life of risk.

Opening the containers at Kenyan/Tanzanian BoarderThe Launceston community collected approximately $300,000 worth of vital educational and medical equipment for Tarime in 2010. Various school communities, in particular The Launceston Church Grammar School (co-ordinated by Allison Bassano), Youngtown Primary (co-ordinated by Wendy Dalton) and Sacred Heart (co-ordinated by Alison Smith) worked particularly hard to allow the fruition of our successful container project.

The medical equipment went to The Tarime Goodwill Foundation Hospital which is run by Dr Hudson Winani.

The educational aids and resources went to many outlying community schools in Tarime, The Tarime Goodwill Foundation Seconday School (which is currently being built by Dr Winani) and to the CareforAfrica Education Resource Centre (which will be built shortly).
