Care for Africa has worked in the same place since 2006. Not across a continent, not in a dozen countries. Tarime, in northern Tanzania, one community at a time.
A donation buys the things a village cannot buy for itself. A deep bore. A sanitation block. A year of maize. Everything after that, the firewood, the cook, the labour and the upkeep, is carried by the people who live there.
That is why the work holds after we leave.
Care for Africa works in the rural communities of the Tarime district in northern Tanzania, alongside local staff, teachers, health workers and the district government.
A donation funds the work in the order it actually happens. A bore goes into a school so there is clean water. A sanitation block follows it. Breakfast goes on the fire so the children can concentrate. Then the classrooms, the teacher training and the women’s centres that supply all of it.

A Binti Pack is six pairs of period pants that last three years, a waterproof bag, and the education session that goes with them. Without one, a girl can miss up to a fifth of the school year.
The women’s soap making program supplies the handwashing stations at those same schools, and the soap the girls use to wash the pants. The two work together, which is why they are both on this list.

A single gift funds a thing that gets built. A monthly gift funds the part nobody fundraises for: the maize that has to arrive every week of the school year, the cook who has to be paid, the pump that has to be maintained.
